But the slogan is slightly premature because thus far-August 1, 2008, at 0500 on a dark summer morning at Diisseldorf Airport's Gate C40-he's flown over only the South Pole, in 2003. However, the New Yorker is here, along with another 148 skywatchers, because reaching the North Pole (or flying above it) is on today's agenda. This day has even more significance for the eager passengers because a total solar eclipse will occur over the Arctic region. Waiting outside the departure lounge is an Airbus A330-200 of LTU, part of the Air Berlin empire, slated to operate Flight LT1111 on behalf of Deutsche Polarflug of Essen, Germany, to the far north of the globe. This is the third time that Deutsche Polarflug has has conducted such a tour, although the previous trips, to Svalbard, the North Pole, and Greenland, were pure sightseeing flights (Airways, August 2007).
