Who’s it for? The Diploma of Occupational Medicine (DOccMed) is arecognised qualification for any doctor keen to demonstratetheir competency in occupational medicine at the level of ageneralist (Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM), 2021a). Itis worth noting that unlike other clinical diplomas, theDOccMed is usually required as an entry-level qualificationto most occupational health physician (OHP) roles and canopen up new career opportunities (Royal Society for PublicHealth (RSPH), 2021). When did you do it? I did the DOccMed course and exams halfway through mysecond year as a GP specialist trainee (GPST2), while prepar-ing for the Applied Knowledge Test. It took me 6 months toattend the required courses, compile a portfolio and completeboth parts of the exam. Why did you do it? The COVID-19 pandemic put a spotlight on occupationalhealth (OH) as everyone needed risk assessments before con-tinuing to work on the front lines (Royal College of Physicians(RCP), 2021). Having gone through the OH process myselfand made acquaintance with several helpful OHPs, I foundtheir work fascinating, as it involves not just the entire spec-trum of clinical medicine, but also incorporates a mix of law, public policy and management, not to mention the myriad ofcareer opportunities in this area. I finally decided that expand-ing my skillset into this area might pay future dividends.
