In ten years, more than half the world's populaiton will be livingin cities. The United Nations (UN) has stated that this will threatencities with social conflict, enviornemntal degradation and thecollapse of basic services. The economic, social, and enviornmentalplanning practices of societies embodying `urban sustainability' havebeen proposed as antidotes to these negative urban trends. `Urbansustainability' is a doctrine with diverse origins. The authorbelieves that the alternative models of cultural development inCuritiba, Brazil, Kerala, India, and Nayarit, Mexico embody theintegration and interlinkage of economic, social, and envionmentalsustainability.
