Sargassum tenuifolium was described firstly based on the specimen collected from Kushimoto, Wakayama prefecture, Japan in 1942 by Y. Yamada. This species is characterized by:1)small discoid holdfast with smooth surface; 2) stem arise from center of holdfast; 3) main branch with a triangular cross section occurs from the stem; 4) thallus length is about 50 cm in many cases; 5)leaf is lanceolate with deep dentate margin; 6) the shape of vesicle is spherical to obovate with a crown leaf and 7) monoecious receptacles have spatulate form. This species grows on the rocks in the intertidal zone of the temperate area and is a rare species in Japan.
