As a result of the PiTESAI, which was approved in 2021, a number of onshore and offshore exploration permit applications have been rejected as they are located outside of the suitable areas. PiTESAI is defining a reference framework for the areas where the prospection, exploration, and production of hydrocarbons are allowed on the national territory. The aim for the framework is to increase the environmental sustainability along with the socio-economic sectors of the hydrocarbon industry in the country. The idea is to define areas that are suitable for future E&P activities and decide on the compatibility of the areas where E&P activities are currently ongoing. A total of 27 onshore and 10 offshore applications were rejected from numerous operators including Eni, TotalEnergies, and Shell.
