摘要

Longitarsus symphyti Heikertinger was added to the British list by Harrison (2010), who discovered this insect on the banks of the River Loddon, near Shinfield in Berkshire (VC 22). On 3 September 2019 I found a single specimen of L. symphyti on common comfrey Symphytum officinale, on an island in the River Thames, at Sutton Pools (SU504944), between Culham and Sutton Courtenay. While attending the 2020 Coleopterists' Day I showed my specimen to Michael Cox, who kindly confirmed its identity. On 23 September 2021 I returned to Sutton Pools, only to find that the place where I had originally found the beetle was fenced off from the adjacent footpath. So instead, I decided to try searching a rough field (SU505946) on Culham Cut Island, situated a short distance to the north of Sutton Pools. When I visited the field in 2019 searches of comfrey plants had drawn a blank. However, in 2021 I found that many of the leaves were shot-holed and discoloured and a few sweeps of the net quickly yielded large numbers of L. symphyti. On 26 September 2021, I found L. symphyti on Fiddler's Island (SP500070), not far from the centre of Oxford. The following day, 27 September 2021, I investigated an area of herb-rich floodplain habitat at Hinksey Meadows (SP495056), a site also known as Osney Mead. L. symphyti was found easily by searching comfrey, while general sweeping yielded single specimens of Longitarsus reichei (Allard) and Longitarsus brunneus (Duftschmid). The new localities for L. symphyti are all in modern Oxfordshire and in Watsonian Oxfordshire (VC 23),apart from Sutton Pools Island, which appears to belong to Watsonian Berkshire (VC 22). Attempts to find L. symphyti at other likely spots in VC 23 have as yet been unsuccessful, although a search of comfrey plants at Yarnton Mead (SP4610) on 3 September 2021 did produce three specimens of the pollen beetle Meligethes symphyti (Heer) (Nitidulidae).
