We tend to focus in these pages on the preservation of historic airframes themselves. But historic buildings relating to aviation shouldn't be forgotten, and if we're worried — as I wrote about last month — for the future of such airframes as the last surviving Blackburn Beverley, the condition of certain airfield structures ought also to cause us some concern. The situation at Old Sarum aerodrome in Wiltshire is all too well-known: since the end of October it has remained closed, in the words of a statement, "to all private and recreational flying" though commercial operations in arrangement with the airfield operator, such as parachuting, are permitted. Now, following the recent severe storms, comes news that Old Sarum's Grade II*-listed Hangar 3 has sustained further serious damage. Its condition was already deteriorating. Now the level of decay is quite alarming.
