Timber theft in New York State is a significant problem. I don't have approximate dollar figures on the total theft in NY but it's safe to say it is hundreds of thousands of dollars, more likely much more than that. Theft is mostly intentional. What can we do to protect ourselves and whom should we call if we are the victims of timber theft? My name is Kevin Beiter. I am a retired Lieutenant with the NYS DEC Environmental Conservation Police. I worked 34 years for the people of this state, and unfortunately worked on dozens of timber thefts over my career. I received my degree in Environmental Science and Forestry from the SUNY Ranger School in the Adirondacks. I am originally from western NY and have lived in the Hudson Valley for the last 25 years. My biggest successful timber theft prosecution is approximately $50,000 and the least is approximately $1,500.
