In 2012, faced with an absence rate increasing by 8% a year, and a quarter of all days lost attributable to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), Staffordshire County Council began an innovative project to reduce back problems among employees. The programme is based on the principles that prevention is better than cure and that early intervention when someone reports an MSD or accident makes a big difference to the outcome for the individual and organisation.
