'A Career Companion to Becoming a CP' is straightforward to navigate, and equally easy to read. The book is broken down into bite-sized chapters covering a wide variety of career stages and options in general practice. Each chapter then ends with a professional profile and reflective piece, often by an experienced GP. The book succeeds in giving a relatively unbiased account of the pros and cons of career options within general practice in the UK. It covers a wide spectrum of career paths; from salaried jobs and partnerships, to locum and out of hours work. It offers a mixture of inspirational stories and also the reality for those looking to expand outside of the standard GP role into teaching, academia or international work. As a result of covering topics of varying complexities, some of the chapters are able to provide more detail than others. Chapter 8, which deals with teaching, for example, provides a thorough background to principles of medical education in general practice, as well as some pragmatic guidance of how best to work with students and involve patients in this process.
