Unlike the practice of medicine, football is not usually a matter of life and death. It's more important than that. Bill Shankly resigned as manager of Liverpool FC in 1974 and is often misquoted, to the effect that football should be considered more important than life and death. It appears his words were taken out of context and that he sought to emphasise the importance of his dedication to football, not to reflect a wider meaning for football. He was surely someone who understood commitment to the cause and dedication to his team.
