For much of the history of New Zealand Government Railways the Department operated a road passenger fleet, and for much of the 20th century was the largest bus and coach operator in the country.The NZR's involvement in road passenger services started in a modest way in 1907 with six buses running between the Culverden railway station and the resort town of Hanmer Springs.
