During the summer of 2022, my wife and I had the good fortune to enjoy a brief vacation in France. The subject of history intrigues me, including the history of ancient Rome, and within that area the history of the Punic Wars--the titanic struggle pitting Rome against Carthage for more than a hundred years in the third and second centuries BC as they competed for control of the western Mediterranean. To refresh readers' memories, Hannibal's crossing of the Alps with his elephants as he attempted to lay siege to Rome figures prominently in this conflict. For those who may not know, ancient Carthage lies within the modern country of Tunisia and is today a suburb of Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. Since Tunisia is located not far from France, relatively speaking, we decided to make a short roundtrip side journey from France to Tunisia.
