Weather routeing has been the standard in container shipping for many years, providing two key services to the industry. Firstly, increased safety - it has kept the global fleet away from the worst of the conditions one can encounter on the high seas. Secondly, it has become a valuable mechanism for charterers to maintain a degree of control over the schedules and fuel impact of the vessels they are hiring. So far, so good. However, things are changing. The spectre - and opportunity - of rapid decarbonisation is forcing the industry to interrogate every established practice and ask: Could this be more efficient?
