Engineering geologist David Shilston is taking the opportunity of the 21st Glossop Medal Lecture to share his thought process behind investigating the geological history of a site. Shilston is Atkins' technical director for engineering geology and a previous president of the Geological Society of London. He can draw on experience from a long and varied career, which started with studies in geology and archaeology - both great interests of his. After completing a master's degree in engineering geology at Imperial College in 1980, he worked for Soil Mechanics, part of now defunct contractor Mowlem, in a job that allowed him to investigate the ground all over the country. This afforded him a broad understanding of the geological conditions in the UK. After an overseas stint in Sudan, Shilston took part in a seismic hazard study with Soil Mechanics colleagues including the late geotechnical engineer and engineering geophysicist Bryan Skipp.
