Beginning in 2024, the United States Air Force's (USAF) Air Education and Training Command (AETC) will be using a new jet to train its pilots: Boeing's T-7A Red Hawk. This single-engined advanced trainer will provide the USAF an all-new advanced pilot training platform that will prepare students to fly its fifth-generation F-22A and F-35A fighters and the low-observable B-21A Raider currently under development. At present, 12 of 18 of the most advanced pilot training tasks undertaken by ATEC cannot be completed with the Northrop Grumman's T-38C Talon, which has served as the USAF's advanced training aircraft since March 17, 1961, when it entered service with the 3510th Flying Training Wing (FTW) at Randolph Air Force Base (AFB), Texas. Since then, Talons have trained more than 72,000 students.
