This is a difficult book to classify. It is surely intended as a reference work for the non-specialist, and the cover blurb states that it will answer questions such as "How does a plane move through the air?" and "What is turbulence?" while also providing "a fascinating encyclopedic" - yes, American spellings throughout - "guide to the history and mechanics of flight" It sets out to do this by featuring a number of significant aircraft types from the Wright 'Flyer' to Concorde, passing en route via the P-38 Lightning, the Northrop YB-35 'flying wing' and the Canadair CL-415 water-bomber. Each is treated to a double-page spread with a wash-coloured line drawing - there are no photos - intended very directly to support the point in question and to help the author with his explanations.
