The excellent study from the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin, Poland, published in this issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases, models the transmission dynamics of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) sub-subtype A6 variant (A6) within and between Poland and Ukraine. This is an exceptionally well-designed and -executed study, with great efforts made to secure a large number of samples as well as perform high-quality laboratory and analytic work. The results show a large migration of people with HIV (PWH) harboring A6 from Ukraine into Poland, as well as large shifts within these countries, associated with military conflicts.
