A child's progression through developmental milestones such as crawling, walking and talking is often the source of much wonder and pride, but when development seems slower than that of their peers, it can cause a huge amount of worry to parents and care-givers. Although children broadly follow a known timeline of development, many will fall outside of what is considered to be the average. Speech and language therapists are allied health professionals trained to support these children and their families in achieving their developmental potential in speech, language, communication and swallowing. This article explores the role of speech and language therapy and describes some of the approaches used in the management of different children.
