The European Parliament voted on Wednesday in favor of a European Commission proposal that would effectively ban the sale of new cars with gasoline or diesel engines in the EU from 2035 as part of the bloc's "Fit for 55" package. However, it also rejected a proposal relating to reform of the EU's Emissions Trading System, which led to the postponement of votes on two other proposals. The EU lawmakers voted by a 339-249 majority in favor of a 100% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles from 2035. The vote represents the parliament's position on the commission's proposal in upcoming negotiations with the EU's 27 member states. Some members of the parliament had sought to water the target down to a 90% reduction in emissions by 2035.
