Muscle and Thymus Antibodies in Myasthenia gravis

SummaryThe serum of 22 patients with myasthenia gravis has been examined for the presence of anti‐skeletal muscle antibodies and anti‐thymus antibodies by means of the antiglobulin consumption test and the antiglobulin consumption test with the aid of immunoelectrophoresis. 15 sera contained antibodies reacting with skeletal muscle; 6 sera were shown to have antibodies reacting with both skeletal muscle and thymus tissue. Only one patient so far had a precipitating antibody against skeletal muscle.In 5 out the 22 patients an antinuclear factor was demonstrated. The specificity of the immunologic reactions was established.RésuméLes sérums de 22 patients atteints de myasthenia gravis ont été examinés quant à la présence d'anticorps anti‐muscles striés et anti‐thymus au moyen du test de consommation de l'anti‐globuline et du test de consommation de l'antiglobuline associé à l'immuno‐électrophorèse 15 sérums contenaient des anticorps réagissant avec les muscles striés; 6 sérums réagissaient à la fois contre les muscles striés et contre le thymus. Un patient seulement avait un anticorps précipitant contre le muscle strié.Parmi 5 des 22 patients, un facteur anti‐nucléaire a pu être mis en évidence. La spécificité de la réaction immunologique a été établie.ZusammenfussungDie Seren von 22 Patienten mit Myasthenia gravis wurden mit Hilfe der Antiglobulinkonsumptionstechnik sowie derselben Technik gefolgt von einer Immunelektrophorese auf Anti‐Skelettmuskel‐ und Anti‐Thymus‐Antikörper untersucht. 15 Seren enthielten Anti‐Skelettmuskel‐Antikörper; 6 Seren enthielten Antikörper, welche mit Skelettmuskel und Thymusgewebe reagierten.
