The utilities arm of construction giant Balfour Beatty has been forced to pay ?2.6 million after a worker was killed when a 2.4 metre trench collapsed on him. James Sim, 32, an employee of LD Oliver Construction, was laying cable ducting in Heysham, Lancaster, for the Walney offshore windfarm. His team was using an excavator to dig a trench that was 1.4 metres deep and, in parts, 60cm wide. As the ducting needed to be fed beneath an existing cable, the trench was 2.4 metres deep in around five places.
