Increasing attention is being paid to a once-obscure region of the former Soviet Union, where several major hydrocarbon projects are getting underway. In this article, Nadir Guerer (l) and Dr Fatih Birol (r), staff members of the OPEC Research Division, examine the background to energy developments in three of the Newly Independent Republics of Central Asia — Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan — as well as in Azerbaijan, a re-emerging major oil player on the south-west shores of the Caspian Sea.
