The island of Hawaii is the largest and easternmost of the state's main islands. Situated on the eastern coast, Hilo International Airport is owned and operated by the Department of Transportation. Originally dedicated on February 11,1928, the facility was renamed General Lyman Field on April 19,1943. It honored Gen Albert Kuali'i Brickwood Lyman, who was the first US general of Hawaiian ancestry. The 1,007-acre installation is one of two major airports on the 'Big Island' and is home to the Hawaii ARNG's AASF #3. The units assigned to this facility include Company C, 1st Battalion, 183rd AVN, which operates ten UH-60Ms in the assault helicopter role. These Black Hawks are tasked with providing air assault and air movement operations. The main body of the battalion is located in Idaho. Detachment 1, Company A, 3rd Battalion, 140th AVN operates four Airbus Helicopters UH-72A utility helicopters in the security and surveillance role. Until it was assigned as the Army's primary training helicopter, the Lakota fleet was tasked with non-combat missions and roughly half of the rotorcraft were assigned to the ARNG. The National Guard's Lakotas are tasked with conducting aviation security, reconnaissance, support and other operations for Homeland Security and Defense, Counter Drug Operations, Defense Support to Civil Authorities and other agencies. The main body of Company A is located in Stockton, California.
