In patients with premature atherosclerosis and chronic renal disease impaired fibrinolysis is related to the serum triglycerides. Triglycerides have some relation to body-weight but the total lipoprotein level correlates best with the insulinogenic response to glucose. Glucose intolerance can be related to lipoprotein levels in chronic renal failure, obesity, and atherosclerosis but has itself no relation to fibrinolytic status.Dietary carbohydrate load adds to pre-existing vascular disease but impaired fibrinolysis is probably only secondary to lipid elevation. Likewise in chronic renal disease poor fibrinolysis can be adequately explained by hyperlipoproteinaemia.
