As the world heats up, incredible numbers of species are thought to be under threat of extinction. Could we - or should we - step in to stem the devastation? THE GOLDEN toad (bufo periglenes), was a small, shiny creature that lived in high-altitude cloud-covered tropical forests above the city of Monteverde in Costa Rica. Today it has the dubious title of being the first species believed to have been made extinct by current climate change. A lone male was found in 1989, and despite extensive searches, not one of the toads has since been tracked down.
