Colombia’s upcoming presidential runoff election, pitting a left-wing former guerilla against an eccentric former provincial mayor, has rattled the country’s political and economic establishment and could have signiocant impacts on the domestic energy sector. The orst-round election, held on May 29, saw Sen. Gustavo Petro, a former member of the Movimiento 19 de Abril (M-19) guerilla group and former Bogota mayor, end up in orst place as expected with just over 40% of the vote. Prior to the voting, polls largely suggested that former Medellin mayor Federico Gutierrez, the heir to the center-right Uribismo tradition that includes current President Ivan Duque, would onish second.
