As Italy began its huge international naval exercise, Daniele Faccioli and Giovanni Colla were aboard the ITS Cavour aircraft carrier as aircraft joined 41 naval units for military maneuvers in the Adriatic, Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas. The Mare Aperto (Open Seas) 23-1 exercise, running from April 14 to May 6, was the largest event to be organized by the Italian Navy. It was the first of two to be held this year, organized and conducted by the Commander in Chief of the Naval Squadron, in which the forces involved are put through their paces to promote greater interoperability between allied nations.
