The herpes family includes viruses that can affect the eye, just as they do the skin, mucous membranes and coverings of the brain. Herpetic eye disease is common in all age groups, and is often seen in general practice. It is caused almost entirely by herpes simplex virus type 1 and varicella-zoster. This article discusses the presentation of ocular involvement and briefly discusses its management. Early recognition by GPs and prompt treatment reduce associated morbidity. Urgent referral may be necessary to avoid sight-threatening complications.
