BASF has unveiled its glufosinate-ammonium-based herbicide,Liberty Ultra,in the US.The solution is intended for use on genetically modified glufosinate-tolerant corn(maize),soybeans, canola and cotton for the control of broadleaf weeds such as waterhemp(Amaranthus tuberculatus),Palmer amaranth(A palmeri),giant ragweed(Ambrosia trifida),and kochia(Bassia scoparia). The company anticipates receiving US registration for Liberty Ultra later this year.It plans to undertake a targeted launch of the product in 2024,and fully commercialize it the following year.BASF notes that the latest addition to its portfolio of Liberty branded glufosinate-ammonium herbicides leverages the company’s proprietary Glu-L technology, which converts the inactive D isomer within glufosinate-ammonium into the active L isomer. It highlights that the approach translates into a 25 reduction in usage rates when compared with prevalent glufosinate herbicides. The firm acquired the Glu-L technology from US crop protection innovation business AgriMetis(Lutherville,Maryland)in 2020.
