Is passenger rail travel on the comeback in New Zealand? KiwiRail is doing its best to encourage people to travel by train. In the middle of May, KiwiRail showed off work on the new carriages destined for the TranzCoastal and TranzAlpine services. The first of the 17-carriage order is in an advanced stage of production and is due to go into service in January next year. In August, a new colour scheme was announced with the carriages being branded as "KiwiRail" rather than "TranzScenic", and the indigo blue paintwork is to be replaced with silver together with red and yellow signage.
