QatarEnergy has taken a 30% stake in two Lebanese offshore blocks, with Beirut hoping the deal will lead to gas discoveries rivaling those in neighboring Israel. Under the agreement signed Sunday, state-controlled QatarEnergy will join operator TotalEnergies (35%) and Italy's Eni (35%) in Blocks 4 and 9. At a signing ceremony on Sunday, Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi said that Lebanon and other countries in the region have a historic opportunity to fill the gap in European gas supplies that followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine. "This moment is crucial," he said. "That is a really big opportunity for the eastern part of the Mediterranean."
