WHETHER children are brainier than their parents is up for grabs, but I'm certain they are more adaptable to technology. Young people are seeing, as we are as adults, many technologies for the first time. But they have more time to immerse themselves in that world and then start to learn about it. Personally, I consult my son on technology issues and have no reservations about saying that. But this tends to be in the realms of electronic gadgetry. When it comes to mechanical devices, such as the gears on his bicycle, then he will come to me for assistance. I see consulting emerging brains as a social society. I am sure that if you went back to Stone Age, you would find that it was the younger generation, rather than the old sages sitting around the fire, that adapted more quickly to new technologies such as the bow and arrow. What surprises me is that only 38 per cent of adults surveyed consulted their children on technological issues. One of the reasons for this is that it is virtually impossible for people today to be expert in all areas of consumer technology.
