A general view of the progress made in health and safety in the ceramics industry since 1968, based upon the experiences of HM Factory Inspectorate of the Health and Safety Executive is given. Health hazards and their control are considered both in relation to the traditional problems of pneumoconiosis and lead poisoning and to the newer problems of noise and asbestos. The main causes of major and other accidents are considered and an analysis of the most serious machinery accidents is given. Greater emphasis should be put on the management of the human control side of health and safety and on the provision of occupational health services.
