Violence can be unpredictable; its causes are complex and influenced by a wide range of factors. Because of this, policymakers and trainers frequently focus on dynamic risk assessment (DRA), which involves real time situational assessments by staff on the ground. Though it is clearly important to develop workers' skills in DRA and independent decision making, these should never be a substitute for the rigours of predictive, planned risk assessments, or we may be in danger of simply reacting to at staff when things go wrong.
