Bacterial communities are a vital part of almost all environments. For medicine, agriculture and environmental management, an understanding of the composition of the relevant bacterial communities and the factors that contribute to their survival andchange is important for the development of more rational methods for diagnosing problems, predicting behaviour, optimizing productivity and developing bioremediation strategies. The BAGECO 5 symposium focused on a number of themes within bacterial genetics and ecology that are relevant to understanding bacterial communities; topics covered included plas-mid diversity, gene-sequence diversity and evolution, and bacterial diversity.
