Testosterone is the main male sex hormone produced primarily by the testes and transported by the blood throughout the body. Testosterone can bind to a specific androgen receptor (AR) or several other proteins such as G protein-coupled receptor family C group 6 member A (GPRC6A), Zrt- and Irt-like protein 9 (ZIP9), and transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 8 (TRPM8). The action of testosterone can be subdivided into two main streams: 7) DNA-binding-dependent (via intemalization of specific ARs to the nucleus, leading to transcriptional changes) or non-DNA-binding-dependent (via AR, GPRC6A, ZIP9, and TRPM8). The latter action occurs at the cell membrane (AR, GPRC6A, and ZIP9), sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum membrane (TRPM8), and mitochondrial membrane (AR) (Fig. 1A).
