Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the UK. However, outcomes have improved dramatically over the past few decades. This is partly due to more effective therapeutic options, but is also due to improved preventative strategies which include better recognition and management of risk factors. This article outlines the conditions and situations that increase the risk of CVD for a patient, as well as approaches to estimate the level of risk. This in turn can guide recommendations for interventions.
