Although the Admiralty, following Parson's demonstration, switched to turbines for all major warships, the marine compound steam engine lived on for a long time in merchant vessels. Indeed the triple expansion compound steam engine was the major merchant marine power plant for over 120 years, until the diesel engine became dominant in the 1960s and 1970s.
