In order to determine the mode of inheritance of resistance to blackeye cowpea mosaic potyvirus in 6 cowpea lines, direct, reciprocal and backcrosses were attempted between resistant and susceptible parents. The data from F1 populations suggested the dominant nature of susceptibility. The number of resistant and susceptible plants in F2 progenies of each cross segregated in a ratio of 1 resistant : 3 susceptible. The observed ratios were compared with the expected monogenic recessive model for goodness of fit using chi2 test. Based on the results obtained from F1, F2 and backcrosses, it is concluded that the resistance in the 6 cowpea lines, IT86F-2089-5, IT86D-880, IT90K-76, IT86D-1010, IT86F-2065-5 and BP1CP3 is conditioned by a single homozygous recessive gene. The symbol for this gene is proposed as bcm (blackeye cowpea mosaic).
