The European Brain Council (EBC) has made 2013 the 'European Year of the Brain'. It is fitting therefore that in the first issue of the QJM in 2013 we welcome a review by Brewer and colleagues1 on the important, but historically neglected, topic of stroke rehabilitation. Stroke is the number one cause of long term adult disability in Europe. While-significant focus has been devoted to the management of acute stroke, it is appropriate that in this review we focus on the long-term disability, the principles of neuro-rehabilitation and the predictors of recovery which can greatly assist on the type, duration and specific goals of rehabilitation for patients. This section of the review will be welcomed., by physicians and will allow better stratification of patients towards for example, early supported discharge (ESD) and community based rehabilitation.
