Two years ago more than 1,000 factory workers perished in the Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh. More recently a major fire in a shoe factory in Manila, Philippines, killed 72 workers. When the Summerland fire (Isle of Man, August 1973) and the Woolworth's fire (Manchester, 1979) happened in the UK, there was outrage followed by calls from the public for improvements. So in this age of global business, can we isolate ourselves from what is happening in these developing countries even though they are several thousand miles away?
