What led you to a health and safety career? After graduation I went into consumer research, but after about seven years I knew it wasn't what I wanted to do forever. After around five months of unemployment, I saw a civil service job advert with the Health and Safety Executive for a Gujarati speaker. As Gujarati is my mother tongue I applied, not thinking anything of it. Despite not knowing anything about construction or health and safety, I was offered the job and I joined the HSE's Construction Division in London as an outreach executive. Ultimately, the HSE wanted to be educated about the Indian community, and equally to educate the community about the HSE.
