I reflected the other night that it has been a few years since a patient stormed out of a consultation with me. Not since I was a registrar, in fact. It happened three times during my time as a registrar at the practice where I now work. Mr 2 had been to see me a few times with constipation and fatigue. We'd done some basic investigations and had some rapport. With a body mass index of 36, I felt it was appropriate to throw his weight into the equation, as it were. This precipitated an awkward silence, which I foolishly tried to fill with some 'helpful' suggestions. He walked out leaving me staring at his red-faced partner, who apologised and followed him out.
