The 2021 Atlantic Hurricane season was known, once again, for a very large number of tropical cyclones (21 as of this writing), and became the fourth-costliest Atlantic hurricane season on record. The most impactful storm in terms of dollar damage and fatalities, by far, was Hurricane Ida. Ida was a high-end Category 4 storm that slammed into Louisiana with 150-mph sustained winds at landfall, the eyewall region barely missing New Orleans. The post-tropical remnants of Ida then arced northeastward into the mid-Atlantic and New England, where the storm transitioned into an extratropical cyclone. The first figure shows the ominous arrival of the full-force, tropical system along the Gulf Coast.
