More than 20 years after his death, the work of the landscape architect, architect, and city planner Alfred Caldwell continues to exert its influence on the city of Chicago. His emphasis on naturalistic, native plantings-derived from mentor Jens Jensen-has received renewed attention recently in response to efforts to encourage urban biodiversity. In fits and starts, the city is bringing the orig-inal vision for the "city in a garden" to fruition, most recently through the revival of Caldwell's unrealized plan for the Lincoln Park extension, developed during his time with the Chicago Park District between 1936 and 1939.
