European giant Airbus announced on February 22 that its first Airbus A380 (F-WWOW) is to become a flying testbed for a liquid hydrogen-fuelled engine.A modified General Electric Passport turbofan engine will be mounted on the rear fuselage, while four tanks carrying 8821b of liquid hydrogen will be installed inside the jet, towards the rear of the cabin. The hydrogen engine will be mounted on the A380's rear fuselage in order to monitor its emissions and contrails without encountering interference from those generated by the aircraft's four existing Rolls-Royce Trent engines.
