Some 16 million tonnes of hazardous cargo passed through the Port of Hamburg last year. Tracking these volumes and ensuring relevant safety regulations are complied with is made easier by advances in computer technology. The Port of Hamburg on the tidal river Elbe, 100 km upstream from the North Sea, is located in the heart of the city, with parts of it only a few hundred yards from residential areas. Because of this, public authorities take human and environmental protection very seriously. Tough local as well as national and international laws, standards and regulations govern safety standards and procedures in and around the port.
