This paper proposes a simple phenomenological model for calculating the transmission spectra of a collimated beam of polarized light transmitted by a sample of biological tissues. It is shown that there is satisfactory quantitative agreement between the experimental and the calculated transmission spectra of a sample of muscle tissue. By comparing the experimental and theoretical transmission spectra of polarized light, the optical anisotropy of muscle tissue is obtained, and the spectral dependence of the degree of depolarization of light by muscle tissue is determined.
