When the members of the Editorial Board began looking at the most timely and relevant themes for the new (mt) magazine, one obvious choice was activity in the polar seas. With the quest for more efficient shipping routes, new opportunities for natural resource extraction, and dramatic interest in ecotourism, the anticipation of longer open-water seasons is attracting a multitude of players. The United Nations will soon rule on the division of arctic seas and sea beds among the U.S., Canada, Denmark (Greenland), Norway, and Russia, further opening these areas to commercial exploitation.
